I don't know the scientific reason, but it really reminded my of one of my favourite childhood book series – Enid Blyton's the Faraway Tree, there were several of them with Moonface and the Saucepan man, and two children who found the tree. They all had adventures in the different lands that arrived at the top of the tree – my favourite was the land of sweets, how I wished I could go there!
I have always wondered why trees split into 4 or 5 or more thick trunks like this.
