Spray or roll-on, it’s a daily necessity – for me anyway – and has been since I hit puberty. Deodorant is just something you use, not exciting at all. Until now that is.
I discovered Fruu’s cream deodorant a few weeks ago and I’ve been trying it out since then. A cream deodorant – who knew!
It’s made with wonky fruits – which I presume are fruits that have been rejected by supermarkets or are out of date – as are all Fruu’s products as far as I can see. It contains watermelon and mango seed butter and it smells delicious. It’s not the watermelon and mango I can smell though, it’s the lemon and lemon verbena oils that lift this deodorant into another realm. Lemon verbena is one of my all-time favourite fragrances, so of course I love it.
So it smells delicious, but does it work?
In short, yes.
You simply apply to your underarms and smooth it in. I find that as I gently rub the deodorant onto my skin I can feel little lumps of product, these quickly disappear though and I think it’s because the deodorant melts into your skin because of your natural body heat.
The instructions say apply a generous amount, but I find I only need a little and the effect lasts all day (so far). I think it might be different if I was at the gym or going for a run, but for every day, non-strenuous use, once a day works for me.
Arrow root powder seems to be the magical drying ingredient, while the soft feel is thanks to the coconut oil and mango seed butter. Fruu points out it’s a deodorant, not an antiperspirant, but the arrowroot powder and magnesium hydroxide (another ingredient) both absorb sweat and are antimicrobial – and to be honest, it works better than my current spray antiperspirant.
(I do think your body gets used to products though and I find that happens a lot with antiperspirants, so I usually alternate brands every few months.)
There’s no aluminium in this balm and of course it’s non-aerosol, so there’s nothing polluting the atmosphere. Fruu says one tube should last two months or more (perhaps a bit less if you exercise lots), and once open it is good for a year.
While I’m really impressed with the product, it does take longer to apply than simply swooshing a spray under your arms, so for those mornings when I’m in a hurry, I won’t be getting rid of my aerosol altogether. That said, Fruu’s deodorant balm will definitely be sharing the bathroom shelf from now on.
