When I wash my hair I always (unless I forget) spritz a heat protection spray over it before drying. I use a hairdryer and straighteners – otherwise I look like an ‘80s David Coverdale on a bad hair day – but I have noticed my once crowning glory has become more frizzy and drier over the years.
Do heat protection sprays work?
That could be the effects of too much extreme heat on my hair, or it could just be because the texture’s changing as I’m getting older, but I do wonder – do heat protection products actually work? Do they make a difference to the state of your hair? Or is it all a vanity thing?
I don’t know the answer, but I do know it is sooo difficult to find a product that suits. They either leave your hair sticky, or dry and hard, so the straighteners don’t so much glide through it as fight with it.
On my never-ending quest for a heat product that doesn’t leave my hair feeling like it needs washing again, I decided to try Coco Licious Heat Defence Spray by Phil Smith Be Gorgeous. I love the fragrance of coconut and regularly use shower gel and other hair products that contain it, but this particular product was new to me. I’d not long given up on a heat protection spray that had promised so much, but was frankly rubbish, when I found this in Sainsbury’s.
What I like about it
I’ve only used it a few times so far – but so far, so good. It smells lovely, it doesn’t dry hard on my hair, there’s no stickiness and my straighteners work as they should. Even the next day, and the day after, my comb moves easily through my hair, which feels soft and smooth. And there’s no frizz.
Even more important for me, the heat protection spray (and all Phil Smith products I believe) is cruelty-free, comes in recycled packaging and contains no animal ingredients. Not bad for something I picked up with the groceries!
Coco Licious Heat Defence Spray costs £3.50 in Sainsbury’s.
