Baking class – strawberry and cream scones

July 14, 2012

This recipe comes from the Be-Ro Book again, which was a staple in our house when I was growing up as baking was a regular event – pies, tarts, cakes and scones were all homemade, never bought from shops. This was one of my favourites and still is, but rather than just butter I thought I would add a touch of summer (seeing as there’s precious little evidence of it outside) with strawberries and cream. I have used double cream but go with whatever you prefer, whipping cream is an alternative, or if you’re feeling really indulgent there’s always clotted…

I will upload images for this tomorrow hopefully as I’m unable to make the scones today – I’m off to see The Boss at Hyde Park so I’m cultivating my Rock Chic persona rather than my Baking Chic one. I’ve got my pac-a-mac at the ready and my brolly is in my bag. Sexy.

Ingredients
225g Self raising flour
Pinch salt
50g Butter
25g Caster sugar
50g Sultanas
1 Medium egg (beaten with milk to make up to 150ml liquid)

Method
Heat the oven to 220°C/ 200°C fan/ gas mark .7
Grease a large baking tray.
Sieve the flour and salt together, rub in the butter until it resembles small breadcrumbs.
Stir in the sugar and sultanas.
Add the egg and milk mixture, keep a little back for brushing the tops of the scones. Use your hands to mix the ingredients together until they form a dough.
Turn the dough out on to a floured surface and knead lightly (do not over knead the dough or you will end up with hard biscuits rather than scones). Roll out the dough until it is around 1cm thick then using a scone cutter or something round – the top of a mug or cup works well – cut out circles of dough.
Gather up the remaining pastry, roll out again and cut out more circles. Place them on the baking sheet – you should have around eight scones.
Brush the top of the scones with the remainder of the egg/milk mixture and bake them in the over for around 10 minutes.
Turn the scones out to cool on a wire rack. When cool, cut them in half and fill with cream, topped with strawberries, then a little more cream and sandwich together. Yummy!

Beauty reviews – face and hands

July 13, 2012

Sensiderma Moisture Soothe from Queen is a bit of a find. It is designed for people with dry but sensitive skin and, says the company, it also helps with conditions such as rosacea.
When I first received my sample of Moisture Soothe I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. Texture-wise it is wet, for want of a better word. What I mean is it doesn’t have that rich feel about it that so many other moisturisers do. Yet, when I tested it on the back of my hand it sank in quickly.
I then used it on my face, first for daytime then at night. Surprisingly, considering its thinner consistency, I found it too heavy for day use. The cream is absorbed quickly but you can still feel it, which is why I found it unsuitable as a day moisturiser. For night though it’s ideal – it’s cold to apply, which I find soothing in itself, and even better, the morning after using it my skin feels softer. That’s not a one off, it happens each time, which is lovely.
If you’re unfamiliar with the brand then let me enlighten you. It was founded in 1927 by three dermatologists and all of its products are geared towards caring for skin that is prone to flare ups, eczema, dermatitis, acne or is just simply sensitive. They are fragrance-free, contain no essential oils and have never been tested on animals.
The collection covers skin care, hair and body care, and there’s a make-up range also. www.queen-cosmetics.com
The smell of roses in one of my favourite things in the world. It takes me back to my childhood and the garden across the lane from our house. The couple who lived there – Aunty Mary and Uncle Stan – had the best rose garden, which they tended lovingly every year. The perfume from their roses surrounded the garden so you can imagine how intense it was when you were in it – and we kids often were.
So of course when I was in The Body Shop I homed in on their Wild Rose hand cream. I’m not sure when it launched but it was sometime in the last couple of months, and it hits my olfactory spot dead on.
The fragrance is real, it doesn’t smell in the least bit artificial, and the colour is the palest pink. It’s quite a light cream and doesn’t take much rubbing in, but you don’t need a great deal of it. My problem is I always apply too much, getting carried away with the fragrance, then of course I end up with greasy hands. Unfortunately because of this my tube is almost empty so I’ll be heading back to the store soon for more. www.thebodyshop.co.uk

When I first tried Green People’s new Hydrating Firming Serum it almost jumped out of the container at me – note to self: don’t press bottle pumps too enthusiastically. This I believe is an update on the company’s Gentle Tone, and they make some impressive claims for it, including it doubles your skin’s natural collagen production and it reduces wrinkles by more than 7%!
Ingredients include rose geranium, chamomile and seaweed, and there’s no parabens, artificial perfumes, colours or petrochemicals to be seen.
I know it’s a serum and not a cream, but I decided to see if it would work on its own. It felt okay without moisturiser on top, but it felt better with. Green People suggest mixing it with their Anti Ageing Facial Oil or with your regular foundation as alternative ways to enjoy its benefits.
I think I applied too much to begin with as my skin was left sticky. Now I use just the tiniest amount on my face and neck (a bit more where my neck is becoming – horror of horrors – a little lined), then I leave it for a few minutes to sink in before applying moisturiser.
It does make my skin feel firmer, but I’ve only been using it a short time so I haven’t noticed me looking any younger yet, hopefully that will come next.
As with all of Green People’s products, the serum is cruelty-free, ingredients are mainly organic, suitable for vegetarians – this one is vegan friendly also – and the packaging is recyclable. www.greenpeople.co.uk

Memories of John

July 12, 2012

I want to write about horses today. The trouble is I no longer have one.

After spending so much time in a one-to-one relationship with my beloved Thoroughbred John, years of feeding and turning out, mucking out, making feed and poo picking, bringing in at night, feeding and putting to bed, not to mention the rugging and de-rugging, grooming, feet cleaning, bathing and farrier standing – well I’m lost basically.

No more for me the freezing cold mornings to come in a few months time, trying to break ice that’s six inches thick on his water bucket, scraping away the snow so he can get to the grass below. No more basking in the sun in the field, me hanging over the gate watching him proudly. No more wandering down Dedham’s country lanes on a relaxing hack, both of us as one and at peace with the world, or as would sometimes happen, him deciding to canter after a horse and rider we don’t know with me hanging on to whatever bit of him or his tack I could manage to grab hold of and not lose my stirrups.

I’m smiling thinking about him now, but oh the pain doesn’t go away. I can’t believe it ever will. What other animal could a person become so close to? A dog – perhaps, a cat – not really. Horses have a power that draws people in, enchanting us, making us so responsive to the needs of these great creatures that our own selfish needs quickly disappear, relegated forever behind caring for our friends. Does that make sense? I think of it as an addiction – but a good one. Where else would you find a normally sane bunch of people standing in the freezing cold in the middle of winter, breaking ice on the aforementioned water buckets and clearing snow from those frozen, hard fields?

I still go to the yard, but it is very difficult to do so. To return and see everybody else doing everything they always have done, is hard to bear. One of the biggest events of my life, one of my greatest tragedies, means I will never be the same. The world stopped for me on 28 May and my life will never be the same again. The 28 May was a sad day for the others, too, but they still had to feed, rug, poo pick and groom as usual. It was a normal day for them, as have been the ones that followed.

My first time back at the yard after John died, a week or so later, I noticed straight away that there was a new hose, that John’s field had been cut back. The baby who had shared John’s field for the last few weeks of his life was in another field, next to another horse, and it felt like a betrayal.

It wasn’t a betrayal of course. My friend had to find a replacement companion for her yearling as it wasn’t fair leaving him on his own at such a tender age. I could see the confusion in his eyes as he tried to fathom out what had happened; my friend told me he had been unsettled since he’d lost his nursery nurse or ‘dad’ as we used to call John. The two of them had been inseparable and I’m grateful that my boy had company he loved for his last few weeks.

How can they continue as if nothing has happened? I ask myself that every time I go to the yard. I still have to sort out John’s belongings and my feed/tack room. I gave away a few rugs he never wore to a horse charity, the ones he wore though – I don’t think I’ll be able to let them go. His bright pink and purple diamond turnout I used as a thick stable rug over the winter, well, I’ll never be able to part with that. Yes, he was a gelding, but pink and purple were his colours and he looked magnificent wearing them.

I go into his stable and look around at the emptiness. There are still a couple of rugs in there – his thin Jasper and a checked summer sheet – I bought him that one before he came to live with me, when he was still with somebody else. I was there the Saturday before last, and I breathed in the smell of those rugs, sucking it in deeply so I could feel him again. His smell is still on them, but it’s getting fainter. Soon it won’t be there any longer. And I will stop going to the yard.

I miss him so much, but one of the things I miss most is burying my head in his soft, hot, furry neck. No matter how bad I felt, I always felt a bit better after a horsey cuddle. I miss the way he used to put his big head in my hands, head sort of down, when we first met each day, for me to cuddle him. I miss the way he was a complete and utter baby when it came to wormer or medicine, pulling his head up and down over and over again, then becoming calm and just accepting the syringe. I love the way he loved his apples and carrots – he would always start tea with a bite of apple and a bit of carrot, then he would eat around them, pushing them out of the way of his mouth with his nose, until there was no feed left. Then, often as not he would go off and eat his hay for a while, before returning to enjoy his fruit and veg, savouring the flavour as long as possible. I love the way he adored polos.

I loved and still love him. I always will. What am I to do?

No horse. I have to find another way forwards, a way to have horses in my life without having a horse in my life. It’s too soon for another one.

I managed to write about horses after all.

Beauty round-up – hair, make-up and fragrance

July 11, 2012

For frizzy hair sufferers everywhere (including myself), Tresemme has introduced Keratin Smooth, a product range that comprises a shampoo, conditioner, treatment masque and heat protection shine spray.

According to Tresemme, a third of women in the UK are “desperate” for products that straighten and smooth unruly hair – I know I’m still looking for a magic potion to help me tame my tresses, but as to whether this is it, well I’ll have to report back at a later date. Keratin Smooth is in store now.

For anyone experiencing withdrawal symptoms for Sex and the City, the HBO shop has come to your rescue with its new Sunrise and Sunset fragrances – the latest additions to the Sex and the City body collections that were launched late last year.

Sunrise is described as capturing the feel of “a laid-back brunch in a sun-drenched outdoor cafe in Manhattan” presumably without the smell of food, while Sunset features notes of freesia, vanilla orchid, muguet, woody amber and tonka, to capture “the soft and warm beauty of sundown reflected in the iconic skyline of New York City”.

I take their word for it as when it comes to fragrance I’m rubbish at recognising the notes, top, middle or base. Both versions are on sale now at www.store.hbouk.com.

If you’re lucky enough to have curls rather than frizz then this might be for you. New Prep Curl Defining Oil from Toni & Guy nourishes, smooths and conditions curls, whether you style your hair or leave it to dry naturally. It may well work on frizzy hair too – though that’s just my guess, the company doesn’t claim it does.

Simply apply the product to damp hair and dry. It’s non-greasy, which is a plus point, and it’s in Boots stores now.

Duo mineral blushers in L – R: Radiant Rose, Pink Blush,
Sweet Apricot and Caramel Fudge
Duo Mineral eye shadows in L – R: Everglade, Rich Tamarind,
Juicy Plum, Purple Passion, Moonlight and Ultra Marine

I’m always happy to hear of new products from Beauty Without Cruelty. The company has just released a collection of eye shadows and blushers that team a natural mineral formula with cruelty-free principles.

The six eye shadows and four blushers are talc-free, long lasting and easy to apply, and they are available now from the online store at www.bwcshop.com.

I’m thrilled to see this brand continue to evolve and embrace the latest make-up trends, without compromising any of its ethics. I remember Beauty Without Cruelty from the 1980s when the products were perhaps not as good as those of the competition. That has changed and BWC is now up there with the bigger brands in terms of ingredients, colours and product range. Their cosmetics are also easier to get hold of now than they were back in the day. Find them in stores nationwide.

I live in the countryside with my dogs and cat, and I love horses, yoga and running (sometimes). Writing is what I do - I've tried other things, but keep coming back to it. And I'm learning to meditate.
