Conversations through the middle

Life from a (slightly) more mature perspective

Grand Designs Live

May 8, 2012

Oh my feet hurt! I spent the day at Excel in London traipsing up and down the aisles at Grand Designs Live. I think it’s been worth it though – I caught up with a few colleagues, made a few new contacts and saw many beautiful products. I think my favourites were the outdoor petal lights by PetalPod, the glass swirling, two-colour worktop from Southern Counties Glass and the marble pebble/ semi-precious stone-look freestanding basins from Color 1 Design (unfortunately I don’t have an image of that). Of course there were also lots of food and drink stands selling hand-made chocolates, confectionery and drinks with a difference – toffee vodka anyone?

One item that really stood out for me was the Wonderbag this is literally a bag you cook in, and it is making a big difference for poor people in Africa, as it cuts down on fuel consumption. The makers – who give a Wonderbag to a family in Africa every time one is sold here – say it cuts fuel usage by around 30%, which makes a big difference to families there. It’s a weird-looking thing but the idea behind it is so simple – an insulated bag that continues cooking food after you take it off the stove, like a very slow cooker. It’s eco friendly as well as a money saver. While I was at the stand the Wonderbag people were cooking a syrup sponge pudding in the bag – they started it off on the hob for 25 minutes, put the pudding pot with lid in the Wonderbag, put the lid on the bag and left it for a couple of hours. Et voila! Lovely looking sponge pudding.

Autumn winter in summer

June 5, 2011

I recently spent the day in London where I attended several autumn winter launches and met some very nice people. Because I no longer live in the Capital I try to fit in several meetings or events in one day to make it more worthwhile travelling in from the country.

So there I am walking through the sunny, hot city, off to see the Cath Kidston winter range, thinking how lovely summer is and how beautiful central London looks in the sunlight. I got in there and was greeted with the CK Christmas collection *gulp*. I should have been expecting it but I wasn’t…

Anyway, there are some lovely pieces there and I’m sure this is only part of the range yet to come.

Generally I find Cath Kidston designs a little too floral for my tastes but I was pleasantly surprised with the Christmas line and really like the colours and patterns, the polka dots in particular.

More Christmas cheer…

And now a close up of my favourite item – the owl tea cosy. It’s practical, cuddly, cute and looks so much better than the tea cosies I remember from years ago. I so want one of these…

Moving away from Christmas now, the AW collection also includes knitwear and some seriously lovely bags, one of which I’ve pictured below, but I think the photo I took doesn’t do justice to the colour.

Cath Kidston was holding a sample sale the same day as the launch so I couldn’t resist treating myself to the coolest cool bag, in big 70s-like flowers and an apron for Dot in the same pattern – lovely.

Bring me sunshine

January 9, 2011

Brrrr another cold day today, frost everywhere this morning. It’s losing its appeal now, so it was good to see these summery cushions. For me, they conjure up images of past seaside holidays, egg and tomato sand-wiches, sandcastles on the beach and family fun. And while balmy, warm weather may be several months away they certainly cheered me up! Roll on summer.

Design beauties

November 23, 2010

During my research for an upcoming feature I came across these images – wow, how the humble basin has changed. Of course, unless you have a huge bathroom they’re not very practical. I can’t see them fitting into my smallest room.

I live in the countryside with my dogs and cat, and I love horses, yoga and running (sometimes). Writing is what I do - I've tried other things, but keep coming back to it. And I'm learning to meditate.
