Cupboard love – Poggenpohl kitchens

June 26, 2012

Gino D’Acampo – celebrity chef and thoroughly nice chap

I love kitchens. It might sound silly to somebody who doesn’t know me, but I do. Whenever I go anywhere I can’t help but notice worktops, cabinets, if the kitchen is country-style or minimalist chic, high-gloss or matt, knobs on or handleless; and the appliances also – make, style, material. It’s the same with sinks and taps, both kitchen and bathroom, I look for the brand and try to recognise the model; I smile to myself when I get it right. You might think I need to get a life (and perhaps you’re right), but I spend a lot of time writing about interiors, especially kitchens, which – I hope – explains my interest.

I was pleased to be invited to an evening reception at Poggenpohl’s Wigmore Street store in London last week. I was surrounded by exquisite kitchens containing the most high-tech appliances, professional spray taps and deep, quality stainless steel sinks. Heaven. Obviously the only kitchens there were Poggenpohl, so I couldn’t play my ‘spot the brand’ game, but there was lots of Champagne, live jazz, canapes … and a cookery demonstration by a celebrity chef to keep everyone amused.

Gino D’ Acampo was the chef in question and he was good. I hadn’t watched him cook before and he just made the entire process look easy. Ok, he did homemade pizza, which isn’t too complicated, but for someone who simply buys them in the shop and puts them in the oven I was impressed – homemade bread base and everything. I’ve already blogged about his pizza recipe here and it could become one of my signature dishes (I don’t cook much and definitely nothing complicated, my other half is the cook in our house and he’s excellent at it). Unfortunately Gino couldn’t bake the pizzas as I believe the ovens were not wired up or something, but he put ona good show, inviting a couple of members of the audience to help him. He also did a book signing – I bought one of his books as the money raised was destined for charity – and I had my photograph taken with him. Don’t know if I’m brave enough to put it up though, I’ll have to think about that one.

It was also great catching up with colleagues and meeting people in the industry. And of course I got to play with the furniture – I just leaned against one cabinet and the drawer opened, soft close, no handles – wonderful.

I’m not sure what kitchen this is but it is possibly the +Segmento by Poggenpohl
This is part of the +Integration design at Poggenpohl’s Wigmore Street store
Storage is crucial in any kitchen and these deep drawers do not disappoint

Separate storage areas make finding contents a piece of cake and is such a practical idea
Today’s kitchens are often designed to link with living areas, using the same shades, materials and textures in both. In this +Artesio design the living and kitchen zones are open plan, separate, yet one becomes the other. The key is multi-function and comfort
Okay, here it is. Me with Gino D’Acampo.

Beauty roundup – face, nails and body

June 25, 2012

With so many new beauty products on the market it’s hard to know where to start when it comes to looking for something new, so I thought I’d introduce a regular news post of what’s out there, both just launched gems and pieces that have perhaps been around a while, but because they’re from small suppliers or they’re niche products, you might not have heard about them.

That reminds me, the new beauty hall at Marks & Spencer in Marble Arch opens on Wednesday and I’m told it is to showcase products from less well-known brands. I so can’t wait to see it and try out the products that I went there a week early. I had heard the launch was last Wednesday – wrong. I’m in towo=n on Thursday so intend to have a play in there then.

By the way, let me know what you think of the products I post about and what you think about having a beauty round-up on the blog.

With the weird weather we’re having this summer it’s hard to know what to wear from one day to the next; it’s either pouring with rain or stifingly close. For days when the heat is getting to you, a facial spray such as this one from natural skincare company Angela Lawford is ideal and easy to fit in your bag. Freshen Up contains orange blossom, geranium and rose, and you can see it at Angela Langford.

This pretty pink blush is from 100% Pure Cosmetics. The colours are made from fruit and vegetable pigments, nothing else, which the company claims gives your skin the benefits of the antioxidants they contain (though surely these nutrients will have disappeared during manufacturing – I’ll have to ask). The products are paraben-free and contain no synthetic chemicals They’re also gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Also available in coral and taupe.

There’s a cheek and lip tint (left), if you prefer your blush liquid, and a  lip glaze (right) with a  base of cocoa and avocado butters to keep your lips hydrated. The collection also includes eye shadow, eye liner, cream blush and mascara. Find them at Cocktail Cosmetics.

I’m a little late to the party with this one as I know lots of other writers have already covered it, but it’s for a good cause as sales of the peel will help raise money to vaccinate children in Africa. Elemis is donating 1 vaccine for every tube sold and has already hit the 10,000 mark – which is excellent. There’s still a way to go though until it reaches its aim of 50,000.

Papaya Enzyme Peel contains papain, a fruit enzyme found in pineapple and papaya. It acts as an exfoliant, dissolving away dead skin cells, and there’s no need to rub. Simply apply to cleansed skin, leave for 10 minutes then remove with a damp cloth.

It’s been around for 10 years now and this pretty bottle has been produced to celebrate that anniversary. Created by British designer Laura Oakes, it looks lovely and summery and will certainly stand out on the bathroom shelf. Find it at Elemis.

These nail wraps from Models Own are available in lots of fun designs and the’re not that expensive so they’re great for ringing the changes and varying your look. There’s 20 nail wraps in each pack and a full-size nail file, and they’re easy to apply. They’re exactly the sort of thing I would have to hide from Dot, otherwise she’d ‘borrow’ them and I’d never see them again – except for on her nails. Find them at Boots.

Baking class – pizza

June 23, 2012

In a change to what I was planning on cooking today, I’ve decided to cook homemade pizza. I was completely bowled over by Gino D’Acampo who was the start guest at a Poggenpohl Kitchens event that I attended on Thursday (more of that to come next week.) He demonstrated how to make pizza and I had no idea it was that simple. I bought his book, Italian Home Baking, as it was being sold to raise funds for CLIC Sargent, a charity that works with sick children and their families. The photo above shows the pizza Gino prepared – unfortunately he was unable to cook it, I don’t think the ovens had been wired up. I will add my own photos once I’ve actually cooked the pizzas (this blog is one I prepared earlier, as they say.)

Classica Margherita

Makes 2 pizzas

200g strong white flour and extra for dusting
7g fast-action dried yeast
Pinch salt
140ml water, warm
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil and extra for brushing

For the topping:
200g passata
2 mozzarella balls, drained and cut into little cubes (not buffalo mozzarella)
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
8 fresh basil leaves
Salt and pepper to taste

1 Prepare two baking trays by pouring 1 tablespoon of oil on each and spreading it with your fingers or a pastry brush. Brush the inside of a large bowl with oil.

2 To prepare the dough, put the flour, yeast and salt into a large bowl, make a well in the centre and pour in the water with one tablespoon of oil. Use a wooden spoon to mix everything together to create a wet dough.

3 Turn out the dough onto a well-floured surface and work it with your hands for about five minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in the oiled bowl, brush the top with oil and cover with clingfilm. Leave to rest at room temperature for 25 minutes.

4 Preheat the oven to 200°C/ gas mark 6.

5 Once rested, turn out the dough onto a well-floured surface and divide it in two. Use your hands to push each one out from the centre to create two round disks, about 25cm in diameter. Place the pizza bases on the oiled baking trays.

6 Spread the passata evenly over the top of the bases using the back of a tablespoon. Season with salt and pepper.

7 Divide the mozzarella between the two pizzas and drizzle each one with two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.

8 Cook in the middle of the oven for 18 minutes until golden brown.

9 Two minutes before the end of the cooking, scatter over the basil, then continue to cook.

10 Serve hot.
